Work Experience

We have many applications for work experience each year and we are pleased to encourage young people and give them an insight into our industry. Regretfully we cannot accommodate every young person who would like to spend his/her work experience at Red Ridge. This is especially true during the Summer Term when we are inundated with requests to provide work experience.


Charges
Short Term work experience placements - we now levy a charge of £10.00 per night + VAT as a contribution towards Board and Lodging.

Long Term work experience placements - usually there is no charge. This is because, after a week or so of in-house training, the persons involved are usually able to provide a valuable contribution towards the running of the centre.

Students arriving by train are able to take a taxi from Welshpool to Red Ridge at a cost of about £15.00 each way. See below for telephone numbers of taxis.



Duties
Short Term Placements
Short term placements will be expected to assist the instructors in preparing for the day and tidying up at the end of the day.
Short term placements will be expected to involve themselves in all aspects of the running of the centre.

Long Term Placements
Students will be expected to assist the instructors in preparing for the day and tidying up at the end of the day. Students will track instructors and will receive in-house training in a wide range of outdoor activities.
Competent persons on long term placement will have appropriate hands on experience in the delivery of activities.
Students will be expected to involve themselves in all aspects of the running of the centre.



General
Applicants should have a genuine interest in outdoor pursuits.

All successful applicants for work experience must bear in mind that they represent the centre at all times and should seek to enhance the reputation of the centre.

You must be appropriately dressed, clean and well presented at all times. The perception of standards is important to our guests and body piercing and tattoos should remain concealed at all times. Only very basic jewellery may be worn at any time. Multiple earrings, extreme hair fashions and exposed midriffs are considered inappropriate.

Smoking in the buildings or in the view of young persons is forbidden.

Applicants must understand that, although we will make every attempt to offer you the opportunity to participate in outdoor pursuits, this may not always be possible. Employment in an outdoor pursuits centre encompasses office work, gardening, cleaning the centre, cleaning vehicles, maintainance of equipment, food preparation and serving of food, in addition to outdoor pursuits. Work experience in our centre will reflect this and you will be expected to participate fully in all aspects of our work. Please do not expect to be involved in outdoor pursuits each day.

We encourage all work experience placements to become fully involved in the life of the centre but there are dangers which we must all be aware of. If a client approaches you asking for help, for example, you must think very carefully to check whether help is actually appropriate or safe. eg. A child may ask if they can go the the Zip wire area to retrieve a forgotten jacket or may ask you to get a ball off the roof for them. The only appropriate response in these situations is to say that you will seek advice from a permanent member of staff. The centre has a good intercom system enabling you to do this. In almost all situations you should seek help. If in doubt always ask. Never put yourself at risk.

Persons on work experience may occasionally make their own arrangements to join members of Red Ridge staff on personal climbing, caving, kayaking trips. Whilst we encourage such participation we can accept No liability should an injury occur. It should never be assumed that a person is a safe companion to join on personal outdoor pursuits activities simply because he or she works in an outdoor centre.
